An Inquiry Into: Music

During these months students from lower 5th have been enjoying and sharing amazing experiences through the music. They have had the opportunity to know about different musicians like Satchmo or Louis Armstrong and his famous song ”What a Wonderful World”, as well as the Spanish little boy “Joselito” from the 30’s. They have enjoyed and performed “Copacabana” by Barry Manilow and reflect about “You’ve Got a Friend” by James Taylor.

This important subject held on the second semester of the year, helped boy and girls to identify different music styles and instruments. Throughout several days they have had quick little “musical appreciation exercises” through which they learned about “La Danza de Asturias” by Isaac Albeniz, “The Sweet Cascanueces” by Peter Tchaikovsky and “Carmina Burana” by Karl Orlff while drawing according to their feelings. There are very good pictures that show dramatic or peaceful scenes of life.

Furthermore , these children have had the experience to build up their personal musical instrument and to create their own music employing several harmonic and percussion instrument.

This inquiry has enriched their knowledge while developing their listening and creative skills. They have gotten a valuable experience working through all these weeks and the most important message that it aims: “ People from all Ages and Culture can Enjoy and Create Music”.

They built up very simple ones as water, salt, ammonia and methane with different materials as we can see in the pictures below. The idea is to make them practice and visualize the concepts worked in their notebooks and workbooks as well. They were very involved in this activity.

SPIDER SOUP

Reacently, students from lower 5th b have performed "Spider Soup", a story based on a selfish spider that badly spoiled the opportunity of having a delicious soup at home. They worked hardly to make this presentation a real success. There were the main characters, the narrators and the chorus. Everybody took part in this presentation. This experience has been an excellent opportunity to envolve all the classmates in one only purpose: being one when Drama requires. This has also been an opportunity to make them improve fluency and to develop an important artistic skill like the improvisation.
We are greatful with Miss Sherife Tumburi because she has been very helfull with us always and specially for designing and making the super spider costume.
Congratulation to all of you, Giraffes, you did it!!
